Agnes Szavay of Hungary upset top seeded Francesca Schiavone in their quarterfinal match at the Internazionali di Modena women's tennis tournament.
Szavay defeated the Italian in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the first year of this event where the winner will pocket $22,000.
Elsewhere on Friday, second seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy defeated No. 8 seed Mariana Diaz-Oliva of Argentina, 6-0, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals where she will take on fifth-seeded Anna Smashnova.
Smashnova easily dispatched Emilie Loit of France, 6-1, 6-4, while Tathiana Garbin of Italy needed three sets to defeat Sanda Mamic. Garbin will now face Szavay on Saturday for a spot in the final of this Tier IV event.
