Arroyo to start six-game suspension Tuesday

Boston Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo began serving a six-game suspension Tuesday. The penalty stems from an April 24 game against Tampa Bay when the Boston starter was ejected for intentionally throwing at a batter after warnings were issued. Arroyo started Monday's game in Oakland and walked away with a no decision after allowing four runs in seven innings. The Red Sox will have a pair of off-days before Arroyo is eligible to return on May 25 against Toronto, allowing their current rotation to work on normal rest. In addition to the suspension, Arroyo was also fined an undisclosed amount. Arroyo hit Tampa Bay's Aubrey Huff with a pitch in the sixth inning of the April 24 game and Devil Rays pitcher Lance Carter retaliated with a pair of brushback pitches in the seventh, leading to an on-field altercation. In the bottom of the seventh, Arroyo's first pitch hit Chris Singleton in the leg, leading to his ejection. Arroyo is currently 4-0 with a 3.21 earned run average in eight starts. He has won his last nine regular-season decisions dating to last August -- the longest winning streak by a Red Sox pitcher since Pedro Martinez won nine straight from June 20 - August 10, 2002. Since his last loss on August 15, 2004 against the White Sox, Arroyo has gone 9-0 in 17 starts, 15 of which have been Red Sox victories. The run of 17 starts without a loss is the longest active streak in baseball.
