The San Diego Padres activated second baseman Mark Loretta from the 60-day disabled list and reinstated first baseman Phil Nevin from the 15-day DL.
Loretta has been sidelined since straining a ligament in his left thumb in a May 17 game against Atlanta. He suffered the injury while sliding into first base and underwent surgery on May 24.
The 2004 All-Star is hitting .300 with 13 RBI in 40 games for the Padres this season.
Nevin, meanwhile, has not played since June 20 against Los Angeles because of a strained left oblique muscle. In 66 games this season, he is batting .268 with nine homers, 47 RBI and 30 runs scored.
In other moves, the Padres placed righthanded pitcher Rudy Seanez on the 15- day disabled list, optioned outfielder Ben Johnson to Triple-A Portland, purchased the contract of righthanded pitcher Clay Hensley from Portland and requested release waivers on lefthander Dennys Reyes and righthander Miguel Asencio.
Seanez, who is suffering from a strained right shoulder, is 4-1 with a 2.97 ERA in 38 games this season.
Johnson was hitting .143 in seven games seven games with the Padres this season.
Reyes is 3-2 with a 5.15 ERA in 36 games (one start) for the Padres this season, while Asencio was 0-3 with a 9.42 ERA for Portland
Hensley has a record of 2-2 with a 2.99 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 15 games (14 starts) with the Beavers this season.
