"El Duque" returns for ChiSox

The Chicago White Sox activated pitcher Orlando Hernandez off the 15-day disabled list and the righthander pitched six decent innings in a 7-5 win. Hernandez gave up four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He had been on the disabled list since mid-June for the White Sox, who have won five straight. The Sox also improved their record to 8-1 this season versus the Tigers and 31-5 against the AL Central. "El Duque" hadn't started since June 14 against Arizona when he was touched for six runs in just 4 2/3 innings. He was put on the disabled list five days later. Hernandez was also sidelined from May 17 until June 3 with right shoulder inflammation. Signed to a two-year, $8 million deal in the offseason, Hernandez has a record of 7-2 with a 4.98 earned run average in 12 starts this year. The White Sox opened a roster spot by designating pitcher Shingo Takatsu for assignment. The club has 10 days to either work out a trade for the righthander or give him his outright release. Takatsu was 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA and eight saves in 31 relief appearances with the White Sox this season, one year after recording 19 saves during his first campaign in the majors. Chicago also activated infielder Ross Gload off the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte. He had been on the DL since April with left shoulder inflammation and had just two hits in 13 at-bats over seven games for the Sox this season.
