The Boston Red Sox placed second baseman Mark Bellhorn on the 15-day disabled list Monday. In a related move, infielder Kevin Youkilis was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Bellhorn suffered a sprained left thumb diving for a grounder in the fourth inning of Sunday's game against the New York Yankees. He is hitting .216 with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 28 RBI and 41 runs scored in 85 games for the Red Sox this season.
Now in his eighth season in the big leagues, Bellhorn was sent to Boston by the Colorado Rockies prior to the 2004 campaign. Last year, his first in Beantown, he batted .264 with 17 homers and 82 RBI. He has also played for the Cubs and A's.
Youkilis, who was optioned to Pawtucket on July 10, joins the Red Sox for the third time this season. He is hitting .286 with six doubles, one home run, nine RBI and 10 runs scored in 26 games for the Red Sox. The versatile infielder has played third base, first base and second base.
