Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has been selected the National League's Player of the Week for the period of July 14-17.
Utley racked up a major-league best 10 RBI over the first four games following the All-Star break. He batted .471 (8-for-17) with a home run, two doubles and a triple as the Phillies took three of four games from division rival Florida. He finished the week with an .882 slugging percentage.
The 26-year-old Utley is hitting .314 this season and ranks second among NL second baseman in home runs (12) and third in runs batted in (50).
A Philadelphia player has now captured the Player of the Week award four times this season. Pat Burrell earned the distinction twice earlier, while Home Run Derby champion Bobby Abreu was named on July 6.
The last time the Phillies have had four Players of the Week was in 1991, when Wes Chamberlain, Tommy Greene, John Kruk and Mitch Williams all won the honor.
Others nominated for the award were Chad Tracy and Javier Vazquez of Arizona; Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano and Aramis Ramirez of the Chicago Cubs; Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn and Javier Valentin of Cincinnati; Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca of Florida; Moises Alou, Ray Durham, Noah Lowry and Michael Tucker of San Francisco; Miguel Cairo and David Wright of the New York Mets; Pittsburgh's Zach Duke; Milwaukee's Geoff Jenkins; St. Louis' Chris Carpenter; Atlanta's Rafael Furcal and four other Phillies: Pat Burrell, Mike Lieberthal, Vicente Padilla and Jimmy Rollins.
