Kansas City outfielder David DeJesus and New York Yankee outfielder Gary Sheffield were named co-American League Players of the Week for games played between July 11-17.
DeJesus batted .500 (7-for-14) with one home run, four RBI, four walks and a .600 on-base percentage during the Royals' first four games past the All-Star break. The centerfielder went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored twice during Thursday's win over Detroit.
Sheffield went 8-for-16 and slugged a pair of homers in a four-game series with the rival Boston Red Sox. The All-Star added five RBI and produced league-bests for slugging percentage (1.125), doubles (four) and total bases to help the Yankees win three games during the set.
This is Sheffield's 11th career Player of the Week award and second since joining the Yankees.
Other considered were DeJesus' teammate Matt Stairs; Jorge Cantu and Danys Baez of Tampa Bay; Oakland's Rich Harden and Yankees' closer Mariano Rivera.
