The Washington Nationals have designated first baseman Wil Cordero for assignment and claimed Kenny Kelly off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.
Cordero has struggled this season for the Nats, batting .118 with just two RBI in 29 games. He had been with the Montreal Expos from 1992-95 and 2002-03.
Kelly appeared in seven games for the Reds this season, going 3-for-9 with two RBI.
In other moves, Washington recalled pitchers Joe Horgan and Jacobo Sequea and outrighted them to Triple-A New Orleans and Double-A Harrisburg, respectively.
