The Cincinnati Reds activated utilityman Ryan Freel from the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Austin Kearns from Triple-A Louisville prior to their 9-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday .
Freel, who started at second base and finished 1-for-4, had been sidelined since June 19 by inflammation at the base of the second toe on his left foot. On the year he is batting .286 with two homers and nine RBI in 54 games this season,
Kearns, who did not play, was hitting just .224 with six homers and 25 RBI in 51 games for the Reds this season, before being sent to the Bats of the International League on June 12.
The Reds starting rightfielder on Opening Day, Kearns hit .342 with seven home runs and 21 RBI for Louisville.
To make room on the roster for both Freel and Kearns, Cincinnati placed outfielder Kenny Kelly and infielder Anderson Machado on waivers. Kelly was immediately claimed by the Nationals, and Machado was picked up by the Rockies.
