The St. Louis Cardinals placed third baseman Scott Rolen on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury prior to Friday's game against Chicago.
Rolen, who underwent surgery shortly after sustaining the injury, initially hurt the shoulder during the fifth inning of a May 10 loss to Los Angeles. He collided with Dodgers first baseman Hee Seop Choi while running out a grounder to the pitcher and immediately grabbed his shoulder.
A three-time All-Star, Rolen went on the DL the next day before returning to action in mid-June. However, since coming back to the lineup, the six-time Gold Glove winner was hitting only .207 with no homers and just eight RBI.
In other team news, the Cardinals recalled third baseman Scott Seabol from Triple-A Memphis.
