Whitt finds opening to win in Memphis

Brandon Whitt found a way through a smoke screen to win Saturday night's O'Reilly 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park. The No.38 Toyota crossed the finish line about four lengths ahead of David Reutimann. The victory was the first of Whitt's Craftsman Truck Series career after winning his first truck pole in the afternoon. But before the drama of the final lap, Ron Hornaday Jr. appeared to have the race all but won. Unfortunately he didn't plan for the strange series of events which ultimately would be his downfall. The race came down to a green-white-checker finish with Hornaday Jr. in first and Whitt just behind. Hornaday Jr., known for his great restarts, should have been an easy winner over the youngster with little experience. But not tonight. The No.6 Chevrolet did great off to a great restart and took control as the drivers saw the white flag. Then the race turned strange. Jimmy Spencer spun out but avoided any walls leaving only a big cloud of smoke in turn four. NASCAR officials seeing that Spencer hadn't crashed or left any debris, let the race continue as the lead drivers reached the backstretch. As they approached the final turn, Hornaday Jr. slowed not knowing if there was a truck in the smoke, but Whitt moved to the top of the track and kept going. He charged through turn four and since Spencer had restarted and was long gone found only the finish line in front of him. Brendan Gaughan, points leader Dennis Setzer and David Starr completed the top-five. By the time Hornaday Jr. got faced in the correct direction, he crossed the finish line in 21th place. Setzer's fourth-place finish coupled with a bad day from Ted Musgrave gives the No.46 Chevrolet driver a 158-point margin in the standings. Bobby Hamilton is third overall, 163 points behind the leader. The next race is scheduled for Friday, August 5th at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
