Alonso flawless in German GP win

Fernando Alonso captured Sunday's German Grand Prix at the Hockenheim Ring. The No.5 Renault crossed the finish line 22.5 seconds ahead of runner-up Juan Montoya. It was Alonso's sixth victory of the season and seventh of his Formula One career. The action began right from the drop of the green flag. Pole winner Kimi Raikkonen got away quickly. Behind him Alonso's Renault made its patented fast start and passed Jenson Button for second as the drivers reached turn one. Michael Schumacher also passed Button to take over third place. Further back, Takuma Sato, Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli came together forcing all three drivers to pit lane. Meanwhile, British Grand Prix winner Montoya, who was forced to start at the back of the field after not posting a qualifying time, charged past eight cars and by the time he crossed the start/finish line to complete lap one was up to 11th place. And that was all on the first lap. After the first five laps, Raikkonen had expanded his lead to 2.6 seconds over Alonso and 6.0 seconds ahead of Schumacher. The Finn kept putting up fast laps and in lap 19 posted the first sub-one minute, 15 second lap. It helped him more than double his margin to 8.6 seconds as the drivers neared their first round of pit stops. Alonso was the first of the leaders to pit and Raikkonen's lead was more than 30 seconds when he made his stop on lap 25. He returned to the track, still in first place. Montoya continued his climb up the ladder and has slipped past Fisichella into fifth place after his first stop. At the mid-point of the 67-lap German GP, Raikkonen's lead was 11.5 seconds over series points leader Alonso. Third-place Schumacher was well back, more than 34 seconds behind the McLaren driver and just one second ahead of Button. The race turned on lap 36 when Raikkonen's McLaren suddenly slowed to a stop with a transmission problem. Alonso inherited the lead and Schumacher moved into second place, though far behind the new leader. Meanwhile, Montoya was putting up the quickest times and was now less than half-a-second behind Button for third place. Schumacher, Button and Montoya were all within two seconds of each other and the best action on the track as Alonso maintained his huge lead. Button passed Schumacher for second in the hairpin and Montoya closed on the seven-time champion. Button and Schumacher pitted for the final time leaving Montoya on the track to post quick laps and make the pass of the second and third-place cars. Montoya did just that and despite Jarno Trulli getting in his way (he was penalized for the tactic), Montoya re-entered the track after his stop in second place, 4.0 second ahead of Button. And that was how the race ended, Alonso with a huge lead taking the win, followed by Montoya and Button. Fisichella, Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard and Felipe Massa completed the points-scoring positions. Alonso now owns a 36-point lead over Raikkonen (87-51). Michael Schumacher (47) is third and Montoya (34) moves up to fourth with his great drive from the back of the field. The next race is scheduled for Sunday, July 31st in Budapest, Hungary.
