The Chicago Cubs placed oft-injured pitcher Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list Monday, marking the second time this season the hard-throwing righthander will be sidelined with shoulder problems.
Wood left a July 20th loss against the Cincinnati Reds after just three innings due to pain his right shoulder, which has been bothering him since spring training. The 28-year-old has been limited to just 10 starts and 54 innings this year and is 3-3 with a 4.67 earned run average.
Rookie Rich Hill was recalled from Triple-A Iowa and made his first major-league start Monday against San Francisco. The Cubs won the game, 3-2, but Hill walked away with a no decision. He allowed two runs and five hits over five innings of work.
Wood was also on the DL from early May to late June with a strained shoulder, one of a number of health-related setbacks during his career. He missed the entire 1999 season after undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery and missed two months last year with a right triceps strain.
Hill, 25, made three relief appearances with Chicago last month before being shipped back to Iowa on June 26.
