New York Mets righthander Pedro Martinez will miss his scheduled start on Friday against the Yankees after receiving a cortisone shot in his right hip.
Martinez was scratched after an MRI revealed inflammation in the hip. However, he still hopes to pitch the series finale on Sunday at Shea Stadium.
"We wanted to give him an extra day to let (the cortisone) settle in," Mets manager Willie Randolph told Newsday. "The last couple of starts, he's been feeling it a little."
Instead, it will be Victor Zambrano for the Mets on Friday and if Pedro is not ready to go on Sunday, then Randolph said Aaron Heilman would "most likely" get the nod.
Martinez, in the first year of a four-year, $53 million contract, has thrived in his first season as a Met, posting a 4-1 mark to go along with a 3.38 earned run average and a league leading 67 strikeouts.
