The Boston Red Sox activated starting pitcher David Wells from the 15-day disabled list and he was handed the loss in Wednesday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics.
Wells was pounded for seven runs and nine hits in just 1 1/3 innings during the 13-6 setback. It was his first action since spraining his right foot while fielding a ground ball in a game against Baltimore on April 25.
The lefthander, who will turn 42 on Friday, was Boston's Opening Day starter after signing a two-year deal with the Red Sox in the offseason. He is 2-4 with a 6.75 earned run average in six starts this season.
To make room on the 25-man roster, Boston optioned righthander Cla Meredith to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday night.
