Maddux records 3,000th career K

Chicago Cubs pitcher Greg Maddux recorded his 3,000th career strikeout when he fanned San Francisco's Omar Vizquel in the third inning of Tuesday night's contest at Wrigley Field. The future Hall of Famer became the 13th member of the 3,000 strikeout club, and in the process became just the ninth hurler in major league history to record both 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts. Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Don Sutton, Gaylord Perry, Walter Johnson and Phil Niekro are the others in the elite company. With two away in the frame, Maddux fanned Vizquel looking for the historic strikeout. It was also his 651st strikeout of his career at Wrigley Field. Maddux added one more strikeout, fanning Vizquel in the sixth. After the start of the game was delayed 2 hours, 43 minutes due to rain, Maddux looked sharp, fanning lead off batter Jason Ellison for his 2,999 career strikeout. A winner of 13 straight Gold Glove Awards (1990-2002), he then recorded the second out of the frame when he made a nifty defensive play on a bunt by Omar Vizquel. Maddux then induced Edgardo Alfonzo on a weak ground out to short to make it 1-2-3 frame, as the drama built until the third inning. The Cubs lost Tuesday night's game, 3-2 in 11 innings. Maddux gave up eight hits and two runs, walked two and struck out three in eight innings. Maddux also became just the second NL pitcher with 300 wins and 3,000 K's, joining Steve Carlton, who ended his career with 329 wins and 4,136 K's. Known as "Lefty", Carlton recorded his 3,000th strikeout with Philadelphia on April 29, 1981 when he struck out the side (Tim Raines, Jerry Manuel and Tim Wallach) in the first inning of a 6-2 win over Montreal. He then recorded his 300th career win while a member of the Phillies in a 6-2 triumph against St. Louis on September 23, 1983. The 39-year-old Maddux, who won four consecutive NL Cy Young Awards (1992-1995) with Atlanta, is just the second Cubs pitcher, including Ferguson Jenkins, to reach the 3,000th strikeout plateau. Maddux joins Bob Gibson as the only pitchers to have pitched their entire career in the National League while recording 3,000 strikeouts. Johnson is the only pitcher to have pitched exclusively in the American League. However, Maddux is just the second pitcher to win his 300th game before striking out his 3,000th batter, joining Johnson. The first pitcher in major league history to win 15 or more games in 17 consecutive seasons (1988-2004), Maddux has 313 career wins. He is also the first pitcher to record his 300th win and 3,000th strikeout against the same club. Maddux beat the Giants August 7, 2004 at SBC Park for his 300th victory. Only one member of the 3,000 strikeout club reached that mark and had fewer than 1,000 walks. Maddux has issued 894 free passes. Jenkins had 997 walks and 3,192 strikeouts over his 18-year career.
