Baltimore Orioles rightfielder Sammy Sosa hit his 586th career home run on Tuesday, tying former Oriole Frank Robinson for fifth all-time.
Sosa, serving as a designated hitter against the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards, drilled a 1-0 pitch from Kenny Rogers into the bullpen in left- center field. The historic blast came with no outs in the sixth inning with Rafael Palmeiro on base.
It was only the 12th round-tripper of the year for Sosa, who is hitting just .234 and has been plagued by injuries. The 36-year-old, however, had hit safely in eight straight games until an 0-for-3 performance Monday, batting .355 with two homers and six RBI in that span.
Sosa passed Mark McGwire on the all-time list July 18th with his 584th homer -- a two-run shot against the Minnesota Twins. In 1998, he and McGwire chased Roger Maris' single-season home run record of 61. Sosa finished with 66 while McGwire posted 70, but Barry Bonds hit 73 in 2001.
Willie Mays is fourth on the career homers list with 660.
Sosa was on the disabled list May 5-24 with an abscess and staph infection in the bottom of his left foot. He had started the Orioles' first 27 games until being sidelined.
The Orioles won Tuesday's game, 5-4.
