Clement hit by line drive in head

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Matt Clement was carted off the field after being hit by a line drive on his head in Tuesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field. It was with one out in the bottom of the third inning that Carl Crawford's liner caromed off Clement's head, behind his right ear. The ball went into left field and the righthander remained on the ground for a few minutes and was surrounded by medical personnel. His neck was placed in a brace, and then Clement was driven off the field on a stretcher. Clement, who was making his team-leading 21st start of the season, tried to get his glove up, but he couldn't avoid the screaming line drive and then collapsed to the mound and had little movement. "I have spoken with Matt and his doctors in Florida," said Red Sox medical director Dr. Thomas Gill. "Matt himself never lost consciousness and is in good spirits (at Bayfront Medical Center). The results of his CAT scan were negative. He appears to be doing well, but will stay in the hospital overnight for precautionary purposes, and will be re-evaluated in the morning." Alex Gonzalez scored on the play, which resulted in a single for Crawford and brought the Devil Rays within 5-1. Chad Bradford took over on the mound for Boston, but he allowed a grand slam to Aubrey Huff later in the inning, as Tampa Bay tied the game, 5-5. Boston eventually won, 10-9, in 10 innings. A late addition to the All-Star Game this year, Clement leads the Red Sox in wins (10-3) this season. He was signed to a three-year, $25.5 million contract last winter. Red Sox outfielder Trot Nixon also left the contest after swinging and missing a pitch in the third inning. He suffered a strained left oblique muscle. Adam Hyzdu replaced him in right field.
