Indians put Hafner on DL

The Cleveland Indians placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with post-consussive symptoms. The move is retroactive to July 17, as Hafner has missed the past nine games. Hafner was injured during a July 16 game against the Chicago White Sox after he was hit in the mouth by a pitch. The injury occurred in the first inning when White Sox starter Mark Buehrle threw a curveball up and in on the first pitch against Hafner. However, the ball appeared to hit the batter's right shoulder and then his mouth. Assistant trainer Rick Jameyson immediately rushed over to Hafner and the slugger left the contest. Hafner leads the Tribe in home runs (18), RBI (63) and batting average (.310) and is second on the team in runs scored (55). This will be Hafner's second career stint on the DL. In other team news, Cleveland purchased the contract of infielder/outfielder Jeff Liefer from Triple-A Buffalo. The Indians also recalled lefthander Brian Tallet from Buffalo and optioned righthander Fernando Cabrera to the Bisons.
