The Boston Red Sox have designated veteran pitcher John Halama for assignment, meaning the club has 10 days to trade him or outright release him.
Halama, who signed with the Red Sox as a free agent last December, was 1-1 with a 6.18 ERA in 30 games this season. His lone start this year came May 3 at Detroit, when the 33-year-old lefthander picked up the win after tossing five innings of two-run ball.
The Red Sox also recalled right-handed pitcher Manny Delcarmen from Triple-A Pawtucket. Delcarmen, who was selected by Boston out of West Roxbury (MA) High School in the second round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, posted a 2.79 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings over seven appearances for Pawtucket.
