The Seattle Mariners signed catcher Jeff Clement, the third overall selection in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The left-handed hitting field-general led Southern California with a .348 batting average, 17 homers and 54 RBI last season. He hit .357 with two home runs in the NCAA Super Regional.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Clement also threw out 37 percent (25-of-68) of baserunners last season.
"We are very pleased to get Jeff signed," said Bob Fontaine, Seattle's vice president of scouting. "We believe this is a kid with a very high top side. I like how he swings the bat, and he has all the tools to be a fine defensive catcher."
Clement won the 2005 Johnny Bench Award and was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. His 46 career home runs at USC are second in school history behind Mark McGwire's 54.
Clement will report to Everett, Washington, to play with the AquaSox of the Northwest League.
