The Florida Marlins activated reliever Antonio Alfonseca from the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh.
Alfonseca pitched out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in the eighth inning by getting a 5-2-3 double play before striking out Freddy Sanchez, but the club still lost 6-3.
The righthander had been sidelined retroactive to April 22 with a stress fracture in his right elbow.
In seven appearances this season, Alfonseca is 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA. Alfonseca, a nine-year pro, has a career mark of 29-35 with 121 saves while also spending time with the Cubs and Braves.
To make room on the roster, Florida optioned righthander Randy Messenger to Triple-A Albuquerque.
