Selig upholds Rogers' suspension

Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers had his appeal of a 20-game suspension and undisclosed fine for his incident with a pair of cameramen last month rejected by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig on Wednesday. Selig, who heard the appeal last Friday in Milwaukee, has ordered the suspension to begin with Wednesday night's game in Baltimore. "Kenny Rogers' behavior towards the two cameramen who were present at the ballpark and doing their job on June 29th was wholly unacceptable," said Selig in a statement. "I have always placed a special emphasis on the social responsibility that each of us has in Major League Baseball, given its proper place in American history and culture as a social institution. The media is entitled to perform its important role without fear of physical intimidation or contact from our players or other participants. While I listened carefully to Kenny Rogers' sincere explanation last week, I heard nothing that would warrant either eliminating or reducing the discipline imposed." On June 28th, Rogers told a cameraman and a reporter near the clubhouse to back off. One night later, Rogers went into a tirade. Coming out of the dugout for pregame warmups, Rogers first pushed Fox Sports Net Southwest photographer David Mammeli. Rogers later shoved Larry Rodriguez, a photographer for Dallas- Fort Worth TV station KDFW, and then threw the camera to the ground and kicked it. Rogers approached other photographers and threatened to break other cameras, but then came off the field and was escorted into the team clubhouse. Rodriguez was wheeled off on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital, treated and released. Rogers was sent home about an hour after the incident. The altercation has also led to legal troubles, as Rogers faces a pair of misdemeanor charges stemming from his incident It's the latest in a series of problems with Rogers and his anger issues. He broke a bone at the base of his right pinkie finger when he hit a water cooler in frustration on June 17. He suffered the injury after being pulled from a game against Washington. The 40-year-old lefthander is 11-4 this season and is second in the American League with a 2.77 earned run average.
