Atlanta Braves catcher Johnny Estrada had his three-game suspension reduced to two contests after an appeal and served the first game of the penalty on Wednesday night.
Estrada, who will be eligible to return for Friday's game against Pittsburgh, was suspended and fined for his inappropriate conduct in a game against Florida back on June 30. He not be able to play in Thursday's series finale against the Nationals, as Atlanta looks to sweep its division rival.
In the first inning of the Braves 6-2 loss to the Marlins, Estrada was tossed along with manager Bobby Cox after a peculiar incident. With Florida's Paul Lo Duca at bat, Estrada began arguing with home plate umpire Doug Eddings. During the altercation Estrada appeared to bump Eddings and was immediately ejected. Estrada continued on with his tantrum and eventually made an obscene gesture in Eddings' direction from the dugout.
Estrada is hitting .261 with three homers and 33 RBI this season. However, he's been hampered by back problems recently and is hitting .184 (9-for-49) this month.
Earlier Wednesday, the Braves placed lefthander Mike Hampton on the 15-day disabled list with a back injury. The team also recalled catcher Brayan Pena from Triple-A Richmond.
