The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Trot Nixon on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left oblique strain and recalled pitcher Lenny DiNardo from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Nixon left Tuesday's contest against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after swinging and missing a pitch in the third inning. Adam Hyzdu replaced him in right field.
Nixon is hitting .293 with 11 homers and 50 RBI in 89 games with the Red Sox this season.
DiNardo, a lefthander, has been called up to the big league squad for the third time this season. The 25-year-old has appeared in just two games with Boston this year and has held the opposition scoreless in 1 1/3 total innings.
