The Milwaukee Brewers designated pitcher Ricky Bottalico for assignment before Wednesday's game against Arizona and purchased the contract of hurler Rick Helling from Nashville.
Bottalico appeared in 40 games, all in relief, for the Brewers this season. The righthander posted a record of 2-2 with two saves and an ERA of 4.54. He blew four saves and allowed three runs in one inning in his last appearance on July 22 against the Reds. He served up a homer to Cincinnati's Adam Dunn that traveled an estimated 465 feet in that game.
For his career, Bottalico has compiled a 33-42 record with a 3.99 ERA and 116 saves in 562 big league contests with the Phillies, Cardinals, Royals, Diamondbacks, Mets and Brewers.
Bottalico had back-to-back 34-save seasons with the Philadelphia in 1996 and 1997.
Helling, who signed as a free agent with the Brewers in January, has not pitched in the majors since appearing in 11 games late in the 2003 season for Florida.
The righthander has a career record of 90-78 with a 4.77 ERA in 10 big league seasons with Texas, Florida, Arizona and Baltimore. Helling has started 225 of the 266 games he has appeared in. In 1998, Helling was tied with David Cone and Roger Clemens for the most wins in the American League with 20.
Helling's last win came on September 20, 2003 against the Braves.
