Otis Smith calls it a career after 13 seasons

Former New England Patriots cornerback Otis Smith announced his retirement after 13 seasons on Wednesday. According to The Boston Globe, Smith signed a one-day contract with New England earlier in the week and the team then placed him on the reserve/retired list so he could end his career with the team. Smith, who won two Super Bowls with New England, spent four full seasons with the Patriots and recorded 10 interceptions and three sacks in 56 games with the club. "I wanted to retire as a Patriot because the greatest success of my career came in a Patriots uniform," Smith said in a statement released by New England. "The thing that I really liked about playing in New England is that the fans always appreciated my talents and what I brought to the table, win or lose. They appreciated the effort more than the actual winning itself." Smith had a flare for the dramatic play in big games as he scored on a 47-yard interception return in the 1996 AFC Championship game and also picked off a ball in the third quarter of Super Bowl XXXVI. "When I think about Otis Smith, a few things come to mind immediately: his incredible work ethic, the respect he earned as a result of the leadership he brought to the team and his production in some of our biggest games," New England head coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. "Otis helped the Patriots win a championship and he will always be respected and appreciated for that as well as for his professional approach to the job." Smith, an undrafted free agent, also enjoyed stints with Philadelphia, the New York Jets and Detroit. In 180 career games, he had 525 tackles, 29 interceptions, seven touchdowns and 5 1/2 sacks.
