Gannon set to retire; broadcasting next

Former NFL MVP quarterback Rich Gannon is apparently set to end his playing career and enter the broadcast booth. The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Gannon, who starred for the last six years with the Oakland Raiders and began his career with the Minnesota Vikings, has agreed to a one-year deal with CBS to be an analyst for its NFL coverage. The paper also said the 39-year-old Gannon will join KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities for a pregame show on three Vikings preseason games and a Sunday night sports show during the NFL season. Gannon, who suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck early last season with the Raiders, told the paper he will officially retire next week in Oakland. "It wasn't a hard decision to make," the paper quoted Gannon as saying. "When I suffered the broken neck the decision was made for me." Gannon played the first six seasons of his 18-year NFL career with Minnesota, but had his greatest success during his final six years with Oakland. He won the MVP award in 2002, throwing for 4,689 yards with 26 touchdowns to lead the Raiders to the Super Bowl. The next two years were difficult for Gannon, as his 2003 and '04 seasons each ended on injured reserve. He suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery in 2003 and last September 26 sustained the severe neck injury after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Tampa Bay linebacker Derrick Brooks. In three games last season, Gannon completed 41-of-68 passes for 524 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Gannon, who began his career with the Vikings in 1987 and lives in Minnesota, has thrown for 28,743 yards with 180 touchdowns and 104 interceptions with the Vikings, Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland.
