Rockies ship Chacon to Yankees

The Colorado Rockies have shipped starting pitcher Shawn Chacon to the New York Yankees in exchange for minor league pitchers Ramon Ramirez and Eduardo Sierra. The Yankees' rotation is in disarray. On Thursday, Kevin Brown was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season because of back problems. Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Chien-Ming Wang are all suffering from shoulder problems and are also on the DL. That leaves regulars Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina in the rotation. Nearly two weeks ago, the Yankees acquired veteran Al Leiter from the Florida Marlins. Earlier this week, they signed Hideo Nomo to a minor league contract. Aaron Small was inserted into the rotation on Thursday and allowed three runs on six hits over a career-high seven innings in a 6-3 victory over Minnesota. Chacon, who is 1-7 with a 4.09 ERA this season, owns a seven-game losing streak. After defeating the Dodgers for his only win on April 23, Chacon is 0-7 in his last 10 games (9 starts) with a 4.37 ERA. Nonetheless, he owned the lowest ERA among all Rockies starters this season and allowed two or fewer runs in seven of his 12 starts, including three runs or less in nine of the 12 outings. His problem has been run support, as the Rockies were blanked in each of his last two starts, a 4-0 loss on July 19 at Washington and a 3-0 loss on July 24 at Pittsburgh. The Rockies scored only 34 runs in his 12 starts. Chacon also missed a month of action from June 3 - July 5 due to a strained left hamstring. Chacon, who was drafted by the Rockies in 1996, has appeared in 150 games, including 83 starts, compiling a 24-45 lifetime record with a 5.20 ERA. He was named to the National League All-Star Team in 2003. Ramirez and Sierra, who are both righthanders, will be assigned by the Rockies to Double-A Tulsa. The 23-year-old Ramirez has split the 2005 season between Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Trenton. He went 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in six starts for Columbus and was 6-5 with a 3.84 ERA for Trenton. Sierra, who is also 23, has spent all of this season with Trenton, making 33 relief appearances. He is 3-1 with a 3.28 ERA and two saves.
