Padres to deal Nevin to Rangers for Park

The San Diego Padres have agreed to trade first baseman Phil Nevin to the Texas Rangers in exchange for starting pitcher Chan Ho Park. The San Diego Union Tribune reports the deal is pending approval from the commissioner's office. On Monday, Nevin exercised his right to reject a proposed trade that would have sent him to Baltimore for pitcher Sidney Ponson. Nevin also blocked a trade with the Reds that would have brought Ken Griffey Jr. to San Diego prior to the 2003 season. However, Nevin did not have the ability to block this trade. as the Rangers were not one of the teams included in his limited no-trade clause. "It's been an unbelievable six, seven years here," Nevin told the Union- Tribune before Friday night's game against Cincinnati at Petco Park. "The positives far outweigh the bad times of the past two weeks. I'm sorry I didn't play up to my capabilities this year." For the deal to become official, Park would have to waive his no-trade clause and the teams would have to work out financial details. The Padres have been looking to solidify their starting staff since righthander Adam Eaton is on the disabled list with a finger injury. The 34-year-old Nevin has played mostly at first base this season, but recently has started twice at catcher due to an injury to Ramon Hernandez. Nevin is hitting .256 with nine home runs and 47 RBI this season. Nevin also spent time on the disabled list with a strained left oblique. The first overall pick of the 1992 draft by the Astros, Nevin was traded to the Detroit Tigers in August of 1995, during his first major league season. He was traded to the Angels following the 1997 season and was then dealt to the Padres a few days prior to the 1999 campaign. An All-Star in 2001, Nevin has hit .276 with 183 homers and 667 RBI during his career. His best season came in 2001 when he batted .306 with 41 homers and 126 RBI. Park was supposed to start Friday night's game at Toronto, but was scratched just prior to the contest and John Wasdin started in his place. Park, who signed a five-year, $65 million contract as a free agent with the Rangers after the 2001 season, has compiled an 8-5 record with a 5.66 ERA in 20 starts this season. The 32-year-old righthander went 0-3 over his final four starts for the Rangers to match the longest losing streak of his career. Park had a total of 14 wins in his first three seasons (2002-04) with the Rangers. During his career, Park is 102-77 with a 4.29 ERA in 289 games (244 starts). He began his major league career playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994 and was named to the National League All-Star team in 2001, when he compiled a 15-11 mark with LA.
