Minnesota Twins centerfielder Torii Hunter suffered an ankle injury after crashing into the wall trying to make a catch in Friday's game against Boston at Fenway Park.
X-rays were taken at the ballpark and Hunter was diagnosed with a torn tendon in his left ankle. The team said Hunter will return to Minnesota and undergo an MRI on Monday. The MRI should determine if the damage is more extensive.
"As soon as I saw him grabbing his ankle I thought 'oh no,'" said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "We know it will be a couple of weeks, at least," Gardenhire commented regarding the amount of time Hunter will be lost to the team.
Gardenhire also said Hunter will be placed on the disabled list and outfielder Michael Ryan will likely be recalled from Rochester.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Boston's David Ortiz drove a pitch from Twins starter Carlos Silva to deep center field. Hunter leaped at the wall and his left foot seemed to get caught in the protective padding and turn awkwardly.
The ball hit a railing and stayed in play, but Hunter fell to the ground in obvious pain. He laid on the warning track and was eventually taken off the field on a cart.
Hunter, an All-Star in 2002, has won four consecutive Gold Glove awards. He is leading the Twins in hitting (.269), homers (14), RBI (56) and steals (23) this season. His 23 stolen bases matches a career-high set in '02.
The Red Sox won Friday's game, 8-5.
