Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a fracture in his surgically repaired left foot.
Thomas has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 21 after suffering from inflammation in the foot. He underwent a number of tests in Los Angeles earlier this week and it was determined by Dr. Richard Ferkel that Thomas' foot would need to be immobilized and a second surgery could be in his future.
"It appears Frank has re-injured his foot over the last two weeks while playing baseball, and recent evaluation shows a new fracture through the navicular in his foot," said Ferkel in a statement released by the White Sox.
Ferkel went on to say, "I want to emphasize that I do not feel this injury is career ending. The plan for Frank will be to immobilize him in a cast and follow him with sequential x-rays until the fracture is healed. If the fracture does not heal with conservative treatment, he may require additional surgery in the future."
Thomas, 37, missed the first two months of the season with the same injury. After being activated on May 30, the two-time MVP hit just .219 with 12 homers and 26 RBI in 34 games. He is a career .307 hitter and is 52 homers shy of 500 for his career.
