Red Sox reportedly discussing Manny mega-deal with Mets, D'Rays

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly discussing a blockbuster trade that would send All-Star leftfielder Manny Ramirez to the New York Mets. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are also involved in the complicated deal. Several media sources, including Newsday, the New York Daily News and Boston Globe reported the proposed trade Friday night. The non-waiver trading deadline is Sunday at 4 p.m. (et). The Mets would receive Ramirez from Boston and closer Danys Baez from the Devil Rays. The Red Sox would acquire outfielder/first baseman Aubrey Huff and outfielder Mike Cameron from the Mets, while the Rays would receive a number of prospects, possibly from both teams. Newsday quoted one executive saying that the trade had a "20 percent" chance of happening. "Until something happens you can't really worry about it," Huff said following Friday night's win by the Devil Rays against Kansas City. "There's a lot of stuff flying around, but I can't pay attention to it." Ramirez is the crown jewel in the possible trade and apparently asked the team to be dealt. After this year, he will be a "10 and 5" player, 10 years of major league service and five in a row with one team, which would give Ramirez rights to veto any trade. An eight-time All-Star and the MVP of last year's World Series, the 33-year- old Ramirez is hitting .273 with 28 homers and 92 RBI. His homers are tied for the most in the American League and his RBI are first in the majors. The Red Sox have shown in the past they aren't afraid to make a major deal at the deadline. Last year, general manager Theo Epstein pulled a shocker by trading fan-favorite Nomar Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs in a four-team deal. The Sox landed Orlando Cabrera from Montreal, and Boston won its first World Series since 1918. Boston nearly dealt Ramirez to the Texas Rangers after the 2003 season for Alex Rodriguez, but that was warded off by the Players Association. If Ramirez is traded, he would be reunited with three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez, who left the Red Sox as a free agent after last season to sign with the Mets. Baez, a 27-year-old righthander, is 5-3 with 20 saves and a 3.11 ERA this season. Cameron is hitting just .264 with 10 homers and 32 RBI this year, while Huff has a .270 average with 13 homers and 63 RBI. The prospects proposed in the trade could involve pitchers Lastings Milledge and Yusmeiro Petit from the Mets, and Double-A pitcher Anibal Sanchez and catcher Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox.
