McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen captured the Hungary Grand Prix Formula One event at the 2.722-mile, 14-turn, Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary. He crossed the finish line 35.581 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher.
The victory was Raikkonen's fourth of the season and sixth of his F1 career.
The race began right off the starting grid. As the drivers approached the first turn, 20 cars tried to all turn in at the same time. There obviously wasn't enough room and the big losers were Christian Klein, Rubens Barrichello and points leader Fernando Alonso.
Alonso lost his front wing in the melee and fell to 17th place, more than half a minute behind pole winner Schumacher, who made a clean getaway.
Raikkonen passed Montoya for second place on lap two and with Alonso's early problem was ready for a big afternoon.
Schumacher continued to show the pace, but Raikkonen closed to his rear bumper. Its a very tight, twisty course, however, and on-track passing is difficult. The pair continued to trade fastest laps expanding their lead over third-place Montoya to seven seconds.
Raikkonen pitted on lap 11 and came out in fifth place, indicating a three- stop strategy while Schumacher continued to cruise. By the time the No.1 Ferrari pitted on lap 15, his lead was 10 seconds over Montoya and 26.1 over Raikkonen.
After the first round of stops, it appeared to be a three-car race between Schumacher, Raikkonen and Montoya.
Alonso was stuck at the back of the field and had only made his way up to 14th place, 71 seconds behind the leaders.
Over the next laps, Schumacher and Raikkonen stayed one-two while pulling away from Montoya, who had taken on a huge fuel load in an attempt to go the distance in one more stop.
At the mid-point of the 70-lap event, the Ferrari's lead was just 0.6 seconds over the McLaren with Montoya 10 seconds back.
The McLaren team used a short-fill pit stop to give the lead to Raikkonen on the second pit stop. He used the open track to his advantage and posted fastest lap of the day on lap 40 - 1:21.219.
With 29 laps to go, Montoya began to slow, his McLaren stuck in a low gear. He pulled onto pit lane, his day over after a great run.
Raikkonen inherited the lead and had 17 seconds over Schumacher with 28 laps remaining. He expanded his lead on each lap and the only question was whether the McLaren would make it to the finish line. Already three times this year, Raikkonen had had a failure while leading the race.
But with Alonso out of the points, it was a chance to close on the Spaniard.
Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher leads his brother Ralf by 10 seconds for second place.
Raikkonen made his final stop of the afternoon and still came back on track with a five-second lead over Schumacher who had yet to make his final stop.
Now it was just a matter of bringing the McLaren home in one piece.
The black and silver McLaren held together and Raikkonen took the checkered flag more than half a minute ahead of runner-up Michael Schumacher.
Ralf Schumacher, Jarno Trulli, Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld, Mark Webber and Takuma Sato completed the points-scoring positions.
Raikkonen's fourth win moves him to within 26 points of Alonso (87-61). Michael Schumacher is 32 points back in third place.
After a three-week hiatus, the series will return to the track on Sunday, August 21st for the Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul, Turkey.
