The Florida Marlins placed All-Star first baseman Carlos Delgado on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a sore left elbow and hand. The move is retroactive to July 28.
Delgado, who was signed by the Marlins to a four-year, $52 million contract in the offseason, had been hoping to return this weekend, but the pain in his hand has not subsided.
He returned to South Florida on Saturday where he will be further evaluated by a hand specialist.
On the season, the 33-year-old is batting .294 with 21 homers and 77 RBI.
A native of Puerto Rico, Delgado had spent his entire 12-year career with the Blue Jays prior to this season. Delgado, a two-time All-Star, has a career .283 batting average with 357 home runs and 1,135 RBI.
In a corresponding move, the Marlins recalled righthander Randy Messenger from Triple-A Albuquerque. Messenger will make his third stint with Florida this year and is 0-0 with a 5.11 ERA.
