San Francisco placed pitcher Kirk Rueter on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with gout in his right big toe prior to the Giants 8-1 loss to the Houston Astros.
The club recalled pitcher Brian Cooper from Triple-A Fresno to make the start against the Astros. Cooper was strong in seven innings of work, allowing one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out three, but did not factor in the decision.
Rueter has struggled for San Francisco this season, posting a 2-7 record in 18 starts. The veteran lefthander, who has a 5.95 ERA, has not won since May 13 against Houston.
