Ivan Rodriguez to start serving suspension Monday

All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez will start serving his four-game suspension on Monday, meaning he will miss a four- game series at Toronto. Rodriguez was suspended for four games and fined an undisclosed amount on Friday for his actions during a July 30th game against the Oakland Athletics. In the fourth inning of a 9-5 loss to the A's, Rodriguez got into an argument with home plate umpire Ted Barrett and was ejected for the first time this season. Rodriguez apparently exchanged words with Barrett while Tigers pitching coach Bob Cluck had a conversation with starting pitcher Nate Robertson. Barrett then tossed Rodriguez, who got in the umpire's face. Rodriguez had to be restrained by manager Alan Trammell, shortstop Carlos Guillen and bench coach Bruce Fields. While Rodriguez was in the dugout, his temper flared again and he threw a bag of baseballs onto the field and tossed out his shin guards. Rodriguez, who signed with Detroit in the 2004 offseason, is batting .293 in 97 games this season with nine homers and 41 runs batted in. Vance Wilson is expected to fill in as the starting catcher. Rodriguez won't go to Toronto and instead will rejoin the team for a weekend series at Kansas City.
