Wells scratched from Sunday start

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Kip Wells was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday because of a cracked fingernail on his throwing hand. Wells has struggled recently with an 0-4 mark in his last five starts and hasn't won since July 5 against Philadelphia. For the season, the righthander is just 6-12 with a 4.86 earned run average in 23 starts. The Pirates replaced him with righthander Ian Snell for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Snell last pitched on Thursday when he tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed one hit against San Diego. He has been charged with just one earned run in six innings of his last three outings. This will be Snell's second start of the season. He was the losing pitcher on July 19 against Houston in the opener of a doubleheader, allowing five runs on 10 hits in five innings of a 9-3 Pirate loss. Pittsburgh recalled Snell from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 26. He was 9-2 with a 4.06 ERA in 15 starts at Indianapolis.
