Pavano sidelined for at least another six weeks

New York Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano will likely be sidelined for at least another six weeks after undergoing tests for his ailing shoulder with noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews. The Yankees announced the results during Wednesday's game against Chicago and said the righthander is suffering from rotator cuff tendinitis as well as humerus pain. Rest and rehab have been prescribed as the course of action, leaving the remainder of Pavano's season in doubt. If he cannot throw again for six weeks, the earliest he could return is late September. "The chances are, that if he does come back, it will be a longshot," said Yankee manager Joe Torre after Wednesday's game. "The most important thing is that it gets better. You knew he had to be feeling something because he wasn't throwing up to his expectations." Pavano has not pitched since June 27 and has struggled in his first season as a Yankee, posting a record of just 4-6 with a 4.77 earned run average in 17 starts. He signed a four-year, $40 million contract with New York in the offseason.
