Jones picked as Solheim Cup assistant captain

Rosie Jones has been chosen as the assistant captain for the U.S. Solheim Cup team, team captain Nancy Lopez said on Wednesday. "I am so excited to have Rosie serve as my assistant captain for the 2005 Solheim Cup," said Lopez. "Rosie has been an integral part of the team throughout the years and deserves to be a part of the event, and I wanted to ensure her participation." Jones is a 13-time winner on the LPGA Tour and a veteran of six Solheim Cups. So far in 2005, Jones has posted four top-10 finishes in five events, despite experiencing some neck pain she has dealt with since suffering a herniated disc in her back last year. "I am thrilled to be named assistant captain," Jones said. "It is an honor and a privilege to work with Nancy and The Solheim Cup team and to help lead them to victory. I hope to be playing, but if not then I will be there in a different capacity and I am looking forward to it." At the moment Jones is ranked third on the U.S. Solheim Cup points list and should be able to qualify to play in the event. If Jones qualifies and deems herself fit enough to compete, Donna Caponi will assume the role of assistant captain. "In this unique situation, having the support of Donna Caponi to possibly serve as assistant captain is so reassuring to me," said Lopez. "Donna has been a longtime friend of mine, has the respect of all of the players and her enthusiasm and energy will be so beneficial for the team. Even if we don't activate her as assistant captain, Donna will serve as one of my volunteer helpers throughout the competition." The 2005 U.S. Solheim Cup team will be announced following the completion of the Wendy's Championship for Children in August. The tournament will be contested From September 9-11 at Crooked Stick Country Club in Carmel, Indiana. The European side captured The Solheim Cup in 2003 by a score of 17 1/2 - 10 1/2
