Mets' Cameron could be released from hospital Tuesday

New York Mets rightfielder Mike Cameron could be released from a San Diego hospital as early as Tuesday. Cameron and fellow outfielder Carlos Beltran were injured when they collided during a 2-1 loss at San Diego last Thursday. Cameron suffered the most significant injuries, as he sustained multiple fractures of both cheek bones, a broken nose and a slight concussion. He underwent surgery last Friday and had a follow-up CT scan on Monday. Beltran had tests on Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. He was diagnosed with a zygomatic arch fracture, which is a break of the bone just beneath the eye. Beltran is still deciding whether or not to have facial surgery. He was also evaluated for post-concussive syndrome and had an MRI on his brain and a neurologic evaluation. Both were normal and his status is day- to-day. Beltran hasn't played since last Thursday's contest and is hitting .267 with 13 homers and 59 RBI this season. The frightening incident occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning when pinch-hitter David Ross drilled a one-out ball into the gap that both players made a play for. On the play, a hustling Cameron and Beltran both went diving for the ball and their heads collided in mid-air, with the ball landing in between the two for a triple. Cameron was eventually placed on a stretcher with his neck immobilized in a brace and then carted off the field. So far this season, Cameron is batting .273 with 12 homers and 39 runs batted in. The Mets also updated the status of first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz, who is already on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised lower back. An MRI showed some fluid around the psoas muscle, which embraces the side of the lumbar spine. There is also fluid under the skin. Mientkiewicz will head to Port St. Lucie, FL on Tuesday and will begin his major league rehabilitation Wednesday night for the St. Lucie Mets.
