Berdych came out strong and forced the Spainaird into a first-set tie break, 6-7 (4-7) which Berdych dropped, before eventually taking the final two sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). With the loss, Nadal's 16-match winning streak came to an end. Marat Safin, the No. 4 seed from Russia, dispatched of Czech Jan Hernych in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, to earn a spot in the second round. Sixth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko topped speedy Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 on Day 2, while eight seed Argentian Gaston Gaudio was taken out by Tommy Robredo of Spain, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. American Robby Ginepri, a surprise titlist in Indianapolis last month, grounded French Open runner-up Mariano Puerta 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 on the hardcourts at Lindner Tennis Center. The Argentine Puerta was seeded 10th this week. Another upset came when Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty humbled 13th-seeded Swede Thomas Johansson 6-1, 7-5. The 2002 Australian Open champion Johansson reached the Wimbledon semifinals last month. Additional opening-round wins came for Moya, Argentina's Jose Acasuso, Brit Andrew Murray, Gilles Simon of France, Great Brittain's Greg Rusedski, Swede Robin Soderling, Spaniard David Ferrer and Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, who dismissed oft-injured German Tommy Haas 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
