Mike Skinner set a truck record when he captured the pole for Friday night's Quaker Steak & Lube 200 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway. The No.5 Toyota circled the 1.5-mile oval in a track record 29.500 seconds (183.051 m.p.h.).
The old mark was 30.239 seconds (178.577 m.p.h.) set in May 2004 by David Starr. One year later, Starr also broke the old record, but his mark of 29.979 was only good enough for 15th quickest.
The pole victory was Skinner's second of the season and 19th of his Craftsman career.
Starting on the front row with Skinner will be Rick Crawford, who posted a second-best time of 29.654 seconds.
Kyle Busch (29.696) and Robert Huffman (29.729) will start in row two.
Defending race champion Dennis Setzer will start 18th, while 2002 Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart will begin 19th in the 36-truck field.
The race is scheduled to begin Friday evening at 8:45 p.m.
