New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza suffered a hairline fracture in the lower part of his left hand in Tuesday's 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Piazza suffered the injury in the sixth inning following a foul tip. He is hoping to stay off the disabled list, but for now likely will be sidelined for at least a few days.
The 36-year-old Piazza has two home runs and eight RBI in his last nine games. He is batting .259 with 14 homers and 55 RBI this season.
A 12-time All-Star, Piazza is the all-time home run leader for catchers with 371. He is eight homers shy of 400 for his career.
Ramon Castro is expected to see the bulk of the action behind the plate in Piazza's absence.
