Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro missed Wednesday's 5-3 win over Oakland with a right ankle injury.
Palmeiro, who suffered the injury in Tuesday's 4-3 win, ran before the game, but could not put any weight on the ankle. Team trainers advised him to have a precautionary X-ray.
The 40-year-old Palmeiro, who is hitting .279 with 18 homers and 59 RBI, has played in two games since returning from a 10-day suspension for a positive steroid test.
Palmeiro was suspended after reportedly testing positive for the powerful anabolic steroid stanozolol -- the same substance that Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for in 1988.
Just last month Palmeiro became only the fourth player in baseball history to record 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray. He reached the milestone on July 15 in Seattle.
In other news for the Orioles, Wednesday's scheduled starter Daniel Cabrera was scratched just before game-time with soreness in his lower back. Lefthander Eric DuBose made the start and went six shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He mixed in four walks with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first win since May 28 of last season.
