The New York Mets have placed catcher Mike Piazza on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken left hand.
Piazza suffered a hairline fracture during this past Tuesday's game against Pittsburgh when he was hit with a foul tip. The Mets waited a few days to see if the injury would allow Piazza to play in a limited role, but decided to make the DL move, which is retroactive to August 17.
The 36-year-old backstop is batting .259 with 14 homers and 55 runs batted in this season.
A 12-time All-Star, Piazza is eight homers shy of 400 for his career and his 371 home runs as a catcher tops the all-time list for the position.
The Mets filled the vacant roster spot by recalling catcher Mike DiFelice from Triple-A Norfolk. DiFelice appeared in six games with the Mets in late May and was hitless in eight at-bats.
