St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen has decided to have surgery on his left shoulder and will not play again this season.
A date for the procedure, which will be performed by team physician Dr. George Paletta, has not yet been set. It will likely occur within the next week.
Rolen, who already had an arthroscopic procedure performed on the shoulder back in May, was recently told by Cincinnati Reds team physician Dr. Tim Kremcheck he will need a second and more significant surgery to repair a torn labrum, one which requires around six months of recovery. The All-Star took a couple of days to make his decision, which was announced Sunday.
The six-time Gold Glove winner originally hurt the shoulder in a May 10 collision with Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Hee Seop Choi while running out a ground ball. He had surgery shortly afterward and returned to action in mid-June, but batted only .207 with no home runs and just eight RBI in 26 games upon coming back. Rolen was then put back on the 15-day disabled list on July 22.
The injury limited Rolen to only 56 games, a .235 batting average and five home runs in 196 at-bats this season, one year after posting career-bests of 34 homers, 124 RBI and a .314 average.
