With their first-string punter sidelined after having surgery to repair a sports hernia, the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday signed veteran Sean Landeta to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not released.
The Eagles parted ways with punter Mark Mariscal to make roster space for the 43-year-old Landeta, who punted in Philadelphia from 1999-2002. Landeta will play in the last two preseason games and could see action in the season opener against Atlanta on Monday, September 12.
Landeta, a two-time Pro-Bowl selection, ranks first in NFL history with 1,367 career punts. In 20 seasons in the NFL, Landeta has punted for 59,224 yards with a 43.3 average.
A former member of the defunct USFL, Landeta spent the last two seasons with the St. Louis Rams, punting 99 times for a 43.0 average. After playing with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars of the USFL, Landeta had stints with the Rams, Buccaneers, Giants and Packers of the NFL.
Meanwhile, Mariscal signed with the Eagles in April to replace Johnson. Mariscal, a former Ray Guy Award winner as the top collegiate punter, struggled in the Eagles' first two preseason games and had a punt returned for a touchdown.
Johnson is coming off an outstanding 2004 season, registering a 37.4 net punting average that was the highest by an Eagle since the 1976 campaign. He is expected to return by early September.
