The Boston Red Sox placed reserve catcher Doug Mirabelli on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's interleague series opener with the Atlanta Braves. The move is retroactive to May 19.
Mirabelli, who is suffering from a sprained left wrist, is batting .194 with two home runs and six RBI in 13 games this season. The veteran backstop serves as the primary catcher during knuckleballer Tim Wakefield's starts.
To replace Mirabelli on the active roster, the Red Sox purchased the contract of catcher Shawn Wooten from Triple-A Pawtucket. The 32-year-old Wooten is a career .272 hitter over 266 major-league games with the Angels and Phillies.
Wooten was batting .225 with seven home runs and 27 RBI with Pawtucket this season.
