The Baltimore Orioles placed reliever Jason Grimsley on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday and activated outfielder B.J. Surhoff from the DL prior to their 3-1 loss to the LA Angels of Anaheim.
The Orioles also added pitcher James Baldwin to the roster after claiming him off waivers from the Texas Rangers on Monday.
Grimsley, who had a remarkable recovery from Tommy John surgery in October, has been hampered by an Achilles' injury and was just 1-1 with a 7.98 earned run average in 14 appearances.
Surhoff, who was hitless in three at-bats as the team's designated hitter on Wednesday, had been placed on the DL back on August 8 with a strained groin. In 64 games this season, the veteran utilityman is hitting .261 with four homers and 24 RBI.
Baldwin, meanwhile, spent two months with the O's and recorded a 1.61 ERA over 12 outings. However, he was designated for assignment and was claimed by the Rangers.
The Orioles also optioned first baseman Alejandro Freire to Double-A Bowie. Executive vice president Jim Beattie, though, said that Freire will be back with the big league club in 10 days.
